Edgar Sarmiento is head of the Resettlement and Real Estate department of the mining company Cerrejón. For the last 25 years, he has lived with his family in the “coal land” town built by the company (owned at the time by Exxon Mobil) for its employees on the site of the coal mine at the end of the 1980s. He retired in March 2015.


Jairo Vergara is head of the Social Responsibility department of the mining company Cerrejón. He has now moved to the Glencore subsidiary Prodeco, where he leads the Sustainability department.

María Teresa Roméro is the Resettlement Officer at Cerrejón. She’s responsible for the operative implementation of the resettlement of Tamaquito.

Juan Carlos Restrepo is Vice President of the Public Relations department at Cerrejón. As part of his role, he’s responsible for the company’s public image.

Tony Hayward was named chairman of Swiss commodity company Glencore plc in 2014. He came to public attention in 2010 as chairman of British oil company BP plc, which was responsible for the explosion of the drilling platform Deepwater Horizon and the devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
